Important Note: It's not about the gear, you can take compelling images with just about any camera, even the camera feature on your phone, the examples below were all shot with a $300 point-and-shoot. Having great equipment is good, but sometimes it gets in the way of our creative process.

There are no experience or equipment requirements to attend any of these workshops. Past attendees have been professional or semi-professional shooters, fine art photographers as well as being completely new to photography, bringing with them their first digital camera. All you need is a desire to take better images and an open mind to how you approach your photography.

Capturing great images is more than just following the basic rules of photography, it sometimes requires becoming someone new. The most successful artists are constantly evolving. The best images flow from who we are and are fueled by new ways of thinking, seeing and well…living. We'll explore some new techniques to add to your arsenal and how to perhaps improve some of your old standard techniques. We'll meet at Selby Gardens for a brief lecture, examples and collective discussion and then practice in the gardens focusing on three different subject matters, people, places and things.

Street Photography Workshop

street photography workshop, sarasota, florida

Street photography is as old as photography itself. First explored from the early days in nineteenth-century Europe, to America in the late twentieth century, the pioneering photographers were limited by large cameras and slow film emulsions that required long exposures, constraints that often resulted in staid and stagnant people images. Street photography gained world-wide popularity with the advent of new forms of media like Life Magazine as well as with new the new light and portable cameras with fast-acting mechanisms coupled with high-speed films.

The best photojournalists (a close relative of the street shooter) know that on every block, around every corner, an image exists. Those who are diligent, prepared and patient can capture these moments and turn them into something special.

Start with a short morning lecture at the Gardens where we'll explore a bit of history, examples, applications and techniques that make street photography so relevant and compelling. Apply what you have learned on the streets of Sarasota’s Farmers’ Market, just a short walk from Selby Gardens. Digital cameras preferred. Wear comfortable walking shoes and limit your camera and lens to one each just like the masters of street photography do. Suitable for all levels of experience.
