Sarasota Photography Classes and Workshops

September 26, 2019 – Fabulous Flowers

Flowers are all around us and like images of sunsets, almost ubiquitous to photography itself. But with so many millions of images of the same scene how can we make our images stand out from the rest?

We will explore some unique ways we can take the most iconic images at Selby into unique representations that move closer to fine art than repetitive documentations shot by accomplished visitors over and over. You will be able to use these techniques with almost any camera including advanced and entry level DSLR’s, compact travel cameras and even your iPhone.

Lecture will be abbreviated with practical at 5 work stations throughout Selby Gardens.

Class Fee: $75 (Selby Gardens Members $55). Location: Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota 10am – 1pm

October 23, 2019 – Beautiful Botany in Black & White

Some of the most memorable images of both the past and present were presented in Black and White. Think Ansel Adams, Clide Butcher, Annie Leibovitz to name a few. Black and white images are so often powerful because we are not accustomed to seeing the world in shades of grey rather than full color.

The advent of digital photography as made us crave well executed black and white images even more color images dominate. We will explore how to identify a good color candidate for black and white conversion and many ways to create a great outcome.

Lecture will be followed by practical at 3 work stations in Selby Gardens with examples.

Class Fee: $75 (Selby Gardens Members $55). Location: Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota 10am – 1pm

Sunsets & The Golden Hour

Shooting the “golden hour”

Sunsets are always magical and have always intrigued me as no two are never the same. The conditions change rapidly and I can’t tell you how many unbelievable opportunities I’ve missed because I though it would only be “average”. The combination of light, sky, earth and sun offers a truly amazing opportunity not to mention that sunsets are second only to kittens in popularity. Learn some great techniques for any conditions as well as ways to keep your sunsets creative and different. Push yourself to new limits while keeping it fresh for you as well.

Selby Gardens is now keeping their doors open after their normal closing time of 5pm to allow members to come in and shoot sunsets on November 10 and 17, 2016. This is a rare opportunity not to be missed.

This workshop is open to shooters of any experience level as well as “phone” shooters. Come in and explore.

Prerequisite: This class is intended for students of any level of experience and any type of gear although we ask that you have a basic understanding of the camera you will be bringing to class.

It’s hip to be square

How Instagram Can and Will Change Your Photography

This is one of my favorite workshops for sure. Nothing has done more for my own personal and professional photography than Instagram. It has entirely changed many of my conceptions about images and how they are viewed by others. I also teach an Instagram course for Business not covered on this website (yet).

Instagram users have shared over 30 billion photos to date, and now share an average of 70 million photos per day!

By 2019 the Instagram audience will reach 111.6 million Americans, representing 55.8 percent of social networkers, more than one-third of the population and over four in 10 internet users.

Instagram is creative expression in the form of an app. Everybody discovers. Everybody learns.

We will discuss ways in which you can use Instagram to better your own photography and how to gauge your progress. This will take us on an exploratory journey of what makes a compelling image to other people, not just yourself but to others and to connect your work to you personally.

This is not a one-way lecture, rather a collaborative workshop and includes photo exercises and lots of examples.

Prerequisite: This class is intended for those new to Instagram, infrequent users with self-admitted little understanding of the medium or those just curious and looking to expand their photography horizons. Signing up for Instagram is not mandatory.
